It is the situation & exposition of the vineyard that largely determine the character of a wine. Convinced of this, member estates of the winegrowers’ association Österreichische Traditionsweingüter have been concentrating for more than twenty-five years on the creation of an internationally comparable classification of Austria’s vineyards. The WienWein winegrowers have become part of this process, and to date twelve vineyards in Vienna have been classified as ÖTW Erste Lage:

1. Ried Falkenberg, Bisamberg
2. Ried Wiesthalen, Bisamberg
3. Ried Ulm, Nussberg
4. Ried Gollin, Nussberg
5. Ried Rosengartel, Nussberg
6. Ried Preussen, Nussberg
7. Ried Langteufel, Nussberg
8. Ried Steinberg, Grinzing
9. Ried Seidenhaus, Grinzing
10. Ried Schenkenberg, Grinzing
11. Ried Sätzen, Maurerberg
12. Ried Himmel, Maurerberg

To determine the best vineyard sites in Vienna and thus to distinguish wines with a particularly expressive character – that is the aim of the Österreichische Traditionsweingüter’s classification of the city’s vineyards. For the consumer, this official seal will offer an aid to navigation among the world’s seemingly limitless variety of wines.

This vineyard classification recognises those sites that have reliably yielded outstanding wines over the course of many years. These are those vineyards that with their vines, soil structure, microclimate, exposure & elevation offer optimal conditions for the creation of such wines. Only wines vinified from regionally typical varieties are approved. The three categories of the vineyard classification are Klassifizierte Lage, Erste Lage, & Große Lage, although the third of these classifications, Grosse Lage, has not yet been awarded. Since 2019, all of Vienna’s winegrowers have had the opportunity to have their vineyards classified. For this, certain specified criteria must be satisfied and an observation period of three years is applied.

The winegrowers’ association Österreichische Traditionsweingüter was founded in 1992 and today comprises thirty-six member estates in the Danube region (Kamptal, Kremstal, Traisental, Wagram), twenty members in Carnuntum and six members in Wien/Vienna. The classification process is lengthy and is conducted with the utmost care. A classified vineyard must not only have special qualities in terms of soil and microclimate, but also provide evidence that regionally typical wines of the highest quality are grown there consistently over the course of many years –.

350,000 years ago the Danube River separated the Bisamberg from the Nussberg. Here at this point, the Bisamberg descends to the east and a valley-like meadow-bottom forms. This hollow gives the vineyard its name Wiesthalen (Wiese = meadow, hohl = hollow)

Names of birds lending themselves to vineyards suggest the trapping of wild fowl, or that the parcel is especially frequented by birds. But it could possibly also refer to the breeding of falcons, which would have provided additional source of income for the landowners.

The name was first historically documented in 1315, as »Colein am Nussberg«. There is also an entry regarding the transfer of a vineyard parcel, some 2.25 acres, from 7 June 1330, ‘situated on the Nuzperge right next to the vineyard Tiernstein, bordering at top the vineyard called Golein’. Gallen – pronounced ‘Golin’ in the local colloquial idiom – was at one time a common word meaning ‘moisture’, long out of use. This refers to vines optimally supplied with water.

Ried Rosengartel is popularly known as the heart of the Nussberg. It already played a prominent role in the hierarchy of vineyards during the days of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. An officially recorded notation appears for the first time on 21 October 1365, in which the endowment of half an acre of vineyards ‘located on the Nuzperg and called Rosengertl’, is documented.

The namesake of this vineyard was the royal councillor Heinrich Preussel, who possessed the Urfar of Nussdorf as a fiefdom from 1277–1288. The urfar (Old High German) or urvär (New High German) is a landing place for ships & boats. But it also describes the docking rights for a particular point on the bank where one boards a ferry to cross over the water. The Urfar in Nussdorf was officially mentioned for the first time in the 11th century, and was considered to be a very valuable property.

The name is derived from the shape of the parcel: the vineyard Ried Langteufel is a large, wedge-shaped site with southern exposure. It is said that the very length of the vineyard has always demanded a lot of effort in cultivation, so the vineyard workers would curse: ‘Boy; is that devil long’! An entry exists in official records from 28 November 1384, referring to the sale of ‘1/8 of the vineyard, called the Langtewel, located on the Nusperg’.

The vineyard owes its name to a nearby quarry. It is noted in the 19th century Franziscean cadastre and is also entered in the land registers. Historically, it was first mentioned on 5 April 1340; there is also a record of the sale of a vineyard from October 1391, »ze Grintzingen an dem Stainperge«.

Ried Seidenhaus is located south of the Cobenzl cellars on the Reisenberg, and was originally part of the Cobenzl palace complex. There, guests dined in an exclusive part of the castle restaurant, a space adorned with silk (Seide) wall coverings; hence the name. This relatively new name for the site appeared on the vineyard map for the first time in 1997.
